Frequently Asked Questions...
Please note--I will update these as more questions are asked frequently.

- Why is the store's name "Defunct Books"?
- I actually have never told anyone the real reason behind the name. At least I don't think I have. I give different people different answers depending on what I think might satisfy them, but nobody besides me knows the real answer. My ex-wife, who bought the store with me, doesn't even know. I think I shall take it to my grave.
- UPDATE--I have since told one person. So, the secret is out. Unfortunately, you are not that person.
- Are you hiring?
- Not at the moment. But check back, as this answer might change.
- How long have you owned the store?
- We bought the store in 2003. It had previously been around in one place or another since the 1950s in Spokane (it was originally named Inland Bookstore). We renamed it Defunct Books upon purchasing it (see above). I got sole possession of the store after our divorce (don't worry; she got everything else). I moved the store to Iowa City, Iowa in the summer of 2007.
- Have you read all these books?
- Yes. All 20,000 of them. Mind you, it's hard to retain much information speed reading like that, but I can assure you, it's time well spent.
- Seriously....why "Defunct Books"?
- Well, because....wait, you almost had me there.
- What can I do with my encyclopedia set/treasured collection of Reader's Digest Condensed Books/National Geographic magazine collection?
- They make excellent kindling. (Note--some people have since informed me that burning the ink might be toxic. I say live a little.)
- Oh, my God, you have the best job! What's it like being able to sit around all these great books and read all day?
- Thankfully, I've read all the books, so I don't get that distracted.
- Are you currently buying books?
- Always. I have an addiction. If I am not buying books, I am dead.
- I love the name Defunct Books! What does it mean?
