BROKEN BINDINGS |
This is my first newsletter in the new space, only 9 months in! I figured it was time, as the new space Grand Opening (or Grand Re-opening, for you Inland Northwesters) is this Saturday (see NEWS). So, I have to say that while I am definitely liking Iowa City (and I have barely scratched the surface here), I am definitely missing my friends and customers (and those who were both) from Spokane (and truth be told, from Rathdrum, Post Falls, and Coeur d'Alene as well--you know whom you are). I've had contact with some of you, and I will have contact with more, but if you are ever in the area, or just making a cross country drive, please, by all means, stop in! I also have to remind people that this newsletter is going to take on a decided Iowa City (and surrounding area) feel, so I will take no offense if those of you in the Inland Northwest want to take this opportunity to unsubscribe from the newsletter. To do so, just reply and tell me you want to unsubscribe. If you also want to disparage the current bookstore climate in Spokane, feel free. I won't tell anyone. And if you don't want to unsubscribe (or are too lazy to hit the reply button), that is fine by me as well. I'll be glad to retain as many readers as possible.
So, what have I been doing in Iowa City, other than teaching part time (they let me teach a literature class this semester--that's like paying me for something I'd do free) and working on the store? This being a literary town, there have been plenty of great readings to attend, some I've missed and others I've made it to. John Irving was just in town, as was Tobias Wolff. Elizabeth McCracken is teaching at the U. of Iowa MFA workshop, so I've been able to see her read. And graphic designer (and now author) extroardinaire Chip Kidd was here in the past week. I got two autographed copies of his latest novel, as The Cheese Monkeys is one of my favorite books. Oh, plus I've been eating too often at the great restaurants here, so the New Year's resolution is pretty much shot. Hope you are all well. --Greg |
