LONG TIME, NO TYPE

This is my first newsletter in the new space, only 9 months in! I figured it was time, as the new space Grand Opening (or Grand Re-opening, for you Inland Northwesters) is this Saturday (see NEWS).
So, I have to say that while I am definitely liking Iowa City (and I have barely scratched the surface here), I am definitely missing my friends and customers (and those who were both) from Spokane (and truth be told, from Rathdrum, Post Falls, and Coeur d'Alene as well--you know whom you are). I've had contact with some of you, and I will have contact with more, but if you are ever in the area, or just making a cross country drive, please, by all means, stop in!
I also have to remind people that this newsletter is going to take on a decided Iowa City (and surrounding area) feel, so I will take no offense if those of you in the Inland Northwest want to take this opportunity to unsubscribe from the newsletter. To do so, just reply and tell me you want to unsubscribe. If you also want to disparage the current bookstore climate in Spokane, feel free. I won't tell anyone.
And if you don't want to unsubscribe (or are too lazy to hit the reply button), that is fine by me as well. I'll be glad to retain as many readers as possible.

IOWA CITY

So, what have I been doing in Iowa City, other than teaching part time (they let me teach a literature class this semester--that's like paying me for something I'd do free) and working on the store? This being a literary town, there have been plenty of great readings to attend, some I've missed and others I've made it to. John Irving was just in town, as was Tobias Wolff. Elizabeth McCracken is teaching at the U. of Iowa MFA workshop, so I've been able to see her read. And graphic designer (and now author) extroardinaire Chip Kidd was here in the past week. I got two autographed copies of his latest novel, as The Cheese Monkeys is one of my favorite books. Oh, plus I've been eating too often at the great restaurants here, so the New Year's resolution is pretty much shot. Hope you are all well.

THIS MONTH'S NEWS

GRAND OPENING!!!

This Saturday, April 12th, at 7 p.m., yours truly will be hosting a Grand Opening soiree the likes of which have not been seen in this exact location since the last time somebody here threw one of these things. There will be poetry readings by Dan Troxell and Murray Wolfe of Des Moines (and your guess is as good as mine how I got them to drive over offering appetizers and a mic). There will be appetizers (I foreshadowed that one) catered by The Red Avocado, above which my store sits. There will be special secret surprises (can't tell you). And there will be fewer boxes clogging the aisles. As I am typing this, if I told you there would be a grand opening here in three days, you'd be shaking your head. We'll see.

GRAND OPENING SALE!!!

Starting Saturday through the end of the month, everything in the store will be 20% off. That's in-store sales only (not the website). And, since you have been smart enough to sign up for the newsletter, if you mention the sale, you'll get that discount starting right now. Now. As you read this. That's like three days of bonus savings! (Note--this discount doesn't apply to the 50% off rack, as that would be cheating you, giving you 20% off when everybody else got 50% off. But it DOES apply to the $1 racks, or to the, now, 80 cents racks. Bonus.)

COMING SOON--PHOTOS!

A lot of you are interested in what the new space looks like (I'm interested myself what's underneath all these boxes.), so I will be attaching photos (or links to photos) with the next newsletter. It's a pretty cool space, if I do say so myself, though really I think it was the home builder's fault, mostly.

FORWARD THIS NEWSLETTER!

If you know someone who might enjoy receiving this newsletter on a once-a-month or thereabouts basis, feel free to forward it to them. Some days we enjoy being Iowa City's best kept secret, but there are times when we would actually prefer that people know about us. And if someone you know actually did just forward this newsletter to you, you can sign up to receive it yourself by simply sending an e-mail to: info@defunctbooks.com stating you'd like your very own copy

If you don't see this newsletter in its full visual glory (colors, columns, etc.), that means you don't have your e-mail set to read as HTML. You really should make that change (it's part of your e-mail settings probably), as the newsletter really does look fabulous.

If you do not wish to receive further e-mails or newsletters from Defunct Books, please send us an
e-mail with UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line or text.
